Description

An exquisite piece of vintage English tableware! This is a classic Roll-Top Butter Dish (or Dome Server) crafted by Mayell & Co., and is a wonderful example of their silver-plated work. Featuring the distinctive EP ON Made in England mark (Electro Plate On a base metal, likely Steel or Zinc), this dish was designed to impress on any formal table.

Design & Features:

Form: The dish stands on four ornate, shell-motif cabriole feet. It features a beautifully decorated base and a hinged, dome-shaped lid that rolls open to reveal the interior tray.

Decoration: The dome lid is richly engraved with scrolling foliate (leaf/vine) patterns and features a Greek Key or Guilloche style border around a central medallion.

Function: This type of server was traditionally used for butter, but it is also perfect for serving caviar, pate, or small gourmet condiments.

Markings: Stamped clearly on the base: “MAYELL EP ON MADE IN ENGLAND.”

Condition & Age:

Estimated Era: Early to Mid 20th Century (Post-1900, likely mid-century based on the Mayell EP ON mark).

Condition: Good Vintage Condition. Please note the visible tarnish and patina, particularly on the interior tray and around the base, consistent with its age. There are signs of wear and surface scratches, which are typical for antique silverplate.
