This is an authentic antique “Fear Bowl”, a significant piece of folk culture and medical history from Lebanon. These vessels were traditionally used for spiritual healing and therapeutic rituals, primarily to treat extreme fright, shock, panic, or anxiety.
The Ritual and Significance:
The belief was that drinking water from the bowl—water which had been left to soak and absorb the spiritual energy of the sacred texts—would calm the person suffering from a severe “shock” (al-roub’a or al-khad’da).
Healing Water: Water (sometimes mixed with dates, raisins, or honey) was poured into the bowl and left overnight. The person suffering from fear would drink it first thing in the morning.
Sacred Inscriptions: Traditionally, the bowls were engraved on the inside with protective Qur’anic verses (like Ayat al-Kursi), prayers (du’as), and the names of God (Asma’ Allah al-Husna).
